Third and final film...Finally!

This blog is by Shelby and Kate.

What Kate and I have learned through the past three films is that Soderbergh allows the actors to control the film while he just sits back and okays it. We also noticed that most of his films that the good films contain a lot of name brand actors and actresses. For instance he has used George Clooney (5times), Julia Roberts (4times), Don Cheadle(4times), Catherine Zeta Jones(2 times), and Matt Damon(4times). Soderbergh doesn't seem to control his films the actors does. And we think that is why when the acting is bad the directing is bad too. An example of this is his film Bubbles, it had no name actors and it had really terrible film techniques. It seemed like the film was like a documentary and grainy where as the Oceans movies were more professional and had a more old school Hollywood feel to them. More specifically the Oceans movie has really good music that allows you to feel like a spy and it makes you believe that the characters no more then you do where as in the film Bubble he refrained from using music. Music is a key role for making a film good. If you don't have good music then most of the time you don't have a good movie.

Throughout Oceans 11 they never use a gun which is unrealistic and a bit of an optical illusion because we know that it would never go down that way. A lot a "gangster films" use guns to intimidate people but in Oceans 11 they use their minds to intimidate people not their weapons. Which we really liked! Soderbergh also did an optical illusion with the twins, he puts one of the brothers in a monster truck and then there is what seems to be a miniature one next to it almost to imply a little person is in it. But we later find out that its just a remote control car. Yet again using the idea of optical illusions and also another comedic moment in the film. With an "optical illusion" there always seems to be a comedic moment just to tell you that this isn't possible so don't take it seriously. Another interesting dynamic that he uses is that he has one of the thieves played by Don Cheadle, watching the news and they have an exploding hotel on it, but if he looked behind him he could of just seen the same thing happen live. Once again this was a comedic optical illusion.

I think that Steven Soderbergh doens't have that much talent. Don't get me wrong he definitly has some talent. But overall i think he really lacks it. Like we said before he doens't do well in films unless he has a big name actor in it.
Do you think Steven Soderbergh deserves his academy awards? Do you think there are better directors out there that deserved them more the years that he won?? I think the only reason he won those awards were because of his actors? Each year he won an award his actors won an award too!
Do you think he relies way to much on his actors and not enough on himself to make a good movie?

No kidding this guy seriously needs to find a new career. I don't think he should have won the academy awards only his actors should have because they really ran the show in his films. Please its like Ed Wood, sorry I know you don't think they should be compared but I believe if Ed Wood would have had major actors and actresses that maybe he would be as successful as Soderbergh. Just my thought on the matter. I mean I'm sure he told the actors and actresses where to stand and told them their lines and called cut but I think thats as far as it went. Come on people movies are supposed to be an art and I just don't see it.

What do you think, did he show any kind of artist form? Do you think this guy has any potential at ever making the film about his skills instead of the actors? Personally Kate I believe we could do ten times better then this guy if we had Brad Pitt and George Clooney too!

Well maybe not 10 times better but maybe 2 or 3 times better!:)))
I think he has some artistic form in the Good German. He had enough skills to know to put it in black and white. Personally i thought that was a brillant idea of his. It really captured the time period of when the movie was set.

I think as time has gone on he has developed more skills. And i think he will continue to develop as a director. If you practice enough at something the most likely result will be that you will become better at it. And I think that as time goes on he will become a solid director.

Just a thought... do any directors do a good job with movies with out A list actors??

Actually I have seen a lot of independent movies and almost none of those have any well known actors and actresses. I almost would rather watch one of those then a big hit just because no one gives them a chance and usually the director spends the most time on them because usually that is their first film. Independents are never given the proper awards because they have ten times the better filming then any traditional one by a well known director and actors. If you don't normally watch independents I would totally recommend them.

Anyways I do agree that when you work at something you do get better but I have watched some of his work as he progresses and I just don't see the change. But maybe someday he will achieve greatness but hey its tough out there and there will always be critics that don't like your work so I wouldn't expect me to ever like him. While I'm glad we choose someone where I had seen some of his films, I am still a little disappointed in his other works that we viewed. Well like you said this is our third and final movie so lets just say I'm glad. It's been a pleasure working with you and I hope we can do this again in the future.
